Prior musings have outlined a method of optimizing physical, mental and spiritual health by focusing on self-care and embracing the mindful attitudes of non-judgmental acceptance, patience, curiosity, trust, non-striving,letting go and kindness.

This musing focuses on mindfulness of work throughout our life cycle. There are many facets to our work that shift and change as the years go by. Early on, we may be very influenced by our conditioning, messages about work given to us by our family, peers and society. At times, we may choose employment based on immediate need for monetary survival. If we are fortunate, we eventually may find employment that is in alignment with our core values (such as helping the environment, teaching, helping others, making new discoveries, creativity, being in nature, etc.)

Every job has its pros and cons. Consider the work environment, how you are treated by co-workers and supervisors, commute and travel expectations, hours per week/shiftwork, holiday time, job security, room for learning and personal growth, degree of autonomy and creativity, salary level, income stability, fringe benefits, travel, responsibility and skill set required.

Mindful awareness can assist in making healthy, productive work choices throughout your career. Some of the skills outlined in previous musings are particularly relevant to work environments. Mindful listening and assertive communication are essential. Non-judgmental acceptance can reduce reactivity at work and allow honest evaluation of any changes needed.

Maintaining a regular home meditation practice will help with surfing work-related stress waves. When we are calm and present at work the positive ripple effect can be very powerful.

Changes in our work life are inevitable. We may encounter new responsibilities, personnel ,supervisors or technologies. We may be challenged by unemployment or retirement. Mindful attitudes of trust, patience, acceptance and non-striving can help muster much needed problem-solving, resilience and flexibility.

Many of us spend the majority of our waking hours at work, giving us ample opportunity to use our mindfulness skills!

Mindful Home Practice:
Use your mindful self-awareness,listening and communication skills at work. Take time to reflect on your work environment and your work-life balance. Be courageous and kind to yourself, making any necessary changes with trust, patience and ease.
