Prior musings have outlined a method of optimizing physical, mental and spiritual health by focusing on self-care and embracing the mindful attitudes of non-judgmental acceptance, patience, curiosity, trust, non-striving,letting go and kindness.  This musing focuses on the many health benefits of enjoying nature.

Many of us live an increasing amount of time in a virtual world.  Whether it is our self-generated internal world of the past or future, or technological virtual reality through electronic devices, living this way has the same effect.  It removes us from the true reality available in the present moment.    Being in nature can be a healthy and enjoyable way of returning to present-moment reality.

Studies show that being in nature improves our mood, concentration, memory and problem-solving abilities.  The benefits seem to be dose dependent, but like meditation, even a small amount is helpful. Exposure can range from a brief glance out the window at a majestic tree to a full-fledged wilderness adventure. Studies show that it is the awe inspired by nature’s complexity that has immediate beneficial effects. Even momentary awe makes you happier, kinder and more compassionate.

Spending too much time separate from nature causes what psychologists call “forecasting errors”. These errors cause us to discount or minimize the perceived benefits of being in nature. This can lead to an unhealthy spiral of nature avoidance.  We may feel that the local urban mini-park is not worth visiting, but in fact every little bit helps. One study showed that even a short walk on a blustery winter day, although not necessarily enjoyable, helped with short-term memory and attention.

Exposure to nature is proven to be healthy for mind, body and spirit.

Mindful Home Practice:
Reflect on your daily and weekly contact with nature. Consider increasing your “natural” time by making it a higher priority. You can combine meditation with being in nature by going on a “sense and savour” walk. This means instead of multitasking, cherishing nature with all your senses.  Increase your nature “dose” as much as you can in all seasons.
