Prior musings have outlined a method of optimizing physical, mental and spiritual health by focusing on self-care and embracing the mindful attitudes of non-judgmental acceptance, patience, curiosity, trust, non-striving,letting go and kindness.  These core mindful attitudes are the key to graceful aging.

Healthy aging seems to be determined by genetics, life events ,life choices and by attitudes.   In my 32 years as a family physician, I noticed that my healthiest seniors maintained curiosity and learning as priorities. They also tended to utilize their energy for managing inevitable losses as opposed to fighting them.  Healthy seniors seem to focus on gratitude for their present health instead of regretting losses.

Some of my former patients  did not accept aging gracefully and bullied themselves with unrealistic activities that often led to injury and dissatisfaction.  Comparison to others or our younger selves is a recipe for unnecessary suffering.  It is healthier to find a balance between reasonable effort to stay active in mind and body versus excessive striving.  Acceptance of age-related slowing is healthy and not an indicator of laziness or giving up.

When energy is focused on accepting reality, there is room for joy and creativity at any age. Maintaining social connection, curiosity and meaningful activities are indicators of healthy living.

Loss is part of aging.  Accepting the loss of loved ones and our own health is difficult but essential.  Managing losses with acceptance, patience and self-kindness is helpful.   Having a strong social circle can provide support-it is said that a burden shared is cut in half.

Aging gracefully helps ourselves and those around us. How do we want to be remembered? More than material items or a list of accomplishments, we can choose to leave a more meaningful legacy of grace, kindness and connected presence.

Mindful Home Practice:
Changes in mind and body as we age need to actively monitored.  Formal meditation practice enhances this important mind-body connection.  Journal your activities and attitudes on a regular basis to help with this monitoring.
