Prior musings have outlined a method of optimizing physical, mental and spiritual health by focusing on self-care and embracing the mindful attitudes of non-judgmental acceptance, patience, curiosity, trust, non-striving,letting go and kindness. This musing will explore the benefits of bringing mindfulness to everyday tasks.
We all have seemingly “mindless” or unpleasant tasks on a daily basis such as hygiene, household duties and a variety of chores or projects. One of the many benefits of regular formal mindful practice is being more mindful throughout your day. When faced with mundane or unpleasant chores (changing cat litter comes to mind!) having a mindful approach can ease the burden. Emphasizing the mindful attitudes of curiosity and patience are helpful. These attitudes give some perspective and allow full attention to be given to the task at hand. Generally, tasks go more smoothly and calmly when one is mindful and attentive. There may be a reduction in mishaps and injuries with this more accepting and focused attitude.
Avoiding unpleasant chores can be overcome by taking a short pause and then labeling the resistance. It is said that “if you can name it, you can tame it”. Asking yourself what is specifically unpleasant (boring, complicated, repetitive, messy, etc.) gives an opportunity to pause and become curious. Curiosity reduces negative emotions and promotes calm perspective and acceptance.
Resistance and avoidance often take more energy and trigger more stress hormones than simply getting the job done. Unpleasant or mundane tasks can be turned into “mindful opportunities” instead of stressful events. Humour can be helpful.
Annoying tasks can be performed with full attention instead of resentment. Bring your full attention to all activities. Uni-tasking is far more effective than multitasking.
Footnote: Unfortunately(?), my spouse takes full advantage of my practice of mindful dish washing!
