Prior musings have outlined a method of optimizing physical, mental and spiritual health by focusing on self-care and embracing the mindful attitudes of non-judgmental acceptance, patience, curiosity, trust, non-striving, letting go and kindness. This musing will examine mindfulness during a global crisis.

March 2020: My spouse and I are about to embark on our first cruise in many years. The cruise was booked over a year ago, prompted by being hired to deliver a mindfulness and burnout prevention course on board.

The Covid-19 viral outbreak is gathering steam as I write this. As shared in prior musings, it is helpful to view these major global challenges as “mindful opportunities”. This re-framing encourages perspective and reduces panic.

Mindfulness promotes focusing on the present moment, especially during difficult times. A mindful pause shifts our system from primitive flight, fright or freeze mode to the calm, reasonable resources in our advanced pre-frontal cortex. Flexibility, resilience and wise decision-making are cultivated by mindful practice.

It is important to practice balanced information gathering during any global crisis. Reliable sources checked daily is helpful, but steeping oneself in a constant media stress-bath is harmful. Why suffer twice, once by worrying, then again by actual events?

My spouse and I will need all of our mindfulness skills and attitudes in the coming days. Non-judgmental acceptance, patience, trust, curiosity and non-attachment to outcome will assist in navigating this stress wave. All of us need to mindfully prepare during any crisis. The equanimity and wisdom fostered by mindfulness will help all of us get through this together!
